Het is officieel herfst en dat betekent dat de dagen korter en kouder worden. Tijd dus om 's avonds thuis te blijven en er weer eens een lekker boek bij te pakken of een film of serie aan te zetten. Het Historical Women Project heeft speciaal voor jou 10 films, series en boeken voor de herfst uitgekozen, uiteraard allemaal met een vrouwelijk (historisch) perspectief, en ideaal voor de koudere maanden van het jaar.

It's officially autumn, which means the days are getting shorter and colder. So it's the perfect time to stay in during the evenings and pick up a good book or start a new film or series. The Historical Women Project has selected 10 films, series, and books just for you this autumn — all with a (historical) female perspective, of course — and ideal for the colder months of the year.

TO WALK INVISIBLE

In 1845 besloten drie predikantsdochters uit Yorkshire hun verhalen te publiceren. De redenen waarom, waren net zo grim en guur als het herfstseizoen kan zijn. De zussen leefden onder één dak met hun alcoholistische broer en bejaarde, slechtziende vader. To Walk Invisible is de verfilming van de drie jaar waarin Charlotte, Emily en Anne Brontë hun boeken schreven, die klassiekers zouden worden binnen de Engelse literatuur, terwijl hun broer Branwell het familieleven ontwrichtte. De film werd opgenomen in het historische plaatsje Haworth, waar de zussen daadwerkelijk woonden, en filmmaker Sally Wainwright doet eer aan het grijze, noordelijke klimaat en de ruige schoonheid van de moorlandschappen waar de Brontës zo van hielden.

In 1845, three pastor's daughters from Yorkshire decided to publish their stories. The reasons why, were as grim and bleak as autumn can be. The sisters lived under the same roof with their alcoholic brother, as well as their elderly and visually impaired father. To Walk Invisible is a film about the three years in which Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë wrote their books, which would become classics within English literature, while their brother Branwell disrupted their family life. The film was shot in the historic village of Haworth, where the sisters actually lived, and filmmaker Sally Wainwright does justice to the grey, northern climate and the rugged beauty of the moorland landscapes the Brontës loved so much.

VIRGIN RIVER

Virgin River is onze favoriete feel-good serie voor de herfst! In deze Netflix serie, gebaseerd op de boeken van Robyn Carr, verhuist verpleegster Mel Monroe van Los Angeles naar het idyllische dorpje Virgin River, om de assistent te worden van de plaatselijke huisarts 'Doc' Vernon Mullins. Ze wordt al snel omarmd door de bewoners, vooral door de dreamy bareigenar Jack Sheridan. Maar Mel en Jack hebben allebei zo hun eigen geheimen. Net als de andere bewoners van het dorp. THE INSEPARABLES

Wil je je deze herfst eindelijk eens wagen aan Simone de Beauvoir? Maar vind je haar filosofische werk misschien nog even te veel? Geen probleem! De Beauvoir schreef ook proza. En The Inseparables heeft een speciale plek in haar oeuvre. De Beauvoir schreef deze roman a clef al in 1954 en is gebaseerd op haar vriendschap met Elisabeth Lacoin (1907-1929), die het denken van De Beauvoir sterk zou beïnvloeden. Sylvie Lepage (synoniem voor De Beauvoir) leert Andrée Gallard (Lacoin) op negenjarige leeftijd kennen, wanneer ze bij elkaar in de klas terecht komen. Andrée bevraagt de autoriteiten in haar leven en begint diepe gesprekken over rechtvaardigheid, oorlog, politiek en de positie van vrouwen. Ze is het interessantste wat Sylvie ooit is overkomen: ze voelt liefde voor de geest van Andrée. Het boek werd pas in 2020 gepubliceerd na goedkeuring van De Beauvoirs geadopteerde dochter Sylvie Le Bon.

Would you finally like to delve into the work of Simone de Beauvoir this autumn? But does her philosophical work feel a bit too daunting? No problem! De Beauvoir also wrote fiction. And 'The Inseparables' holds a special place in her body of work. De Beauvoir wrote this roman à clef back in 1954, and it is based on her friendship with Elisabeth Lacoin (1907–1929), who would have a profound influence on De Beauvoir’s thinking. Sylvie Lepage (a stand-in for De Beauvoir) meets Andrée Gallard (Lacoin) at the age of nine, when they end up in the same class. Andrée questions the authorities in her life and initiates deep conversations about justice, war, politics, and the position of women. She is the most fascinating person Sylvie has ever encountered—Sylvie feels a deep love for Andrée’s mind. The book was only published in 2020, with the approval of De Beauvoir’s adopted daughter, Sylvie Le Bon.

TWILIGHT

De herfst is aangebroken, én het is dit jaar twintig jaar geleden dat het boek Twilight van Stephenie Meyer werd uitgebracht. Er is geen beter moment om deze klassieker weer eens te gaan kijken! Autumn has arrived, and this year marks the twentieth anniversary of the release of 'Twilight' by Stephenie Meyer. There’s no better time to revisit this classic! En als je als menswezen op een vampier verliefd bent, dan krijg je te maken met serieuze depressieve en ontwenningsverschijnselen. Gelukkig kan Bella rekenen op de steun van Jacob Black, die net als Edward geen normaal mens is. Catherine Hardwicke, de regisseuse van de eerste Twilight film, moest het stokje overdragen aan Chris Weitz, die van New Moon de meest melancholieke, herfstige film in de reeks maakte. Last van een winterdip? Of ga je door een break up? Pak de chocoladepepernoten erbij en ga lekker deze film kijken.

Catherine Hardwicke, the director of the first 'Twilight' film, had to hand over the reins to Chris Weitz, who turned 'New Moon' into the most melancholic, autumn-soaked film in the series. FRANKENSTEIN

Herfst is het seizoen van Halloween, fantasy en horror. geen beter seizoen dus om de klassieker Frankenstein van mary Shelley te lezen! Frankenstein is het verhaal van wetenschapper Victor Frankenstein, die nieuw leven wilt creëren en zodoende met ongebruikelijke methoden een wezen maakt bestaande uit verschillende lichaamsdelen. Het boek werd in 1818 voor het eerst uitgebracht, het bevat elementen uit de Romantiek en de gotische literaire stijl, en heeft op zijn beurt een hele traditie horror- en sciencfiction verhalen geïnspireerd. Mary Shelley bedacht het verhaal in de koude, regenachtige zomer, van 1816 als onderdeel van een wedstrijd samen met Lord Byron en John Polidori.

Autumn is the season of Halloween, fantasy, and horror — so what better time to read Mary Shelley’s classic Frankenstein! Frankenstein tells the story of scientist Victor Frankenstein, who seeks to create new life and, using unconventional methods, assembles a creature from various body parts. First published in 1818, the novel contains elements of Romanticism and Gothic literature, and it has, in turn, inspired an entire tradition of horror and science fiction stories. Mary Shelley conceived the story during the cold, rainy summer of 1816, as part of a contest with Lord Byron and John Polidori.

THE WONDER

The Wonder speelt zich af in 1862, wanneer een Engelse verpleegster (Florence Pugh) naar een afgelegen Iers dorp reist om een bijzonder geval te onderzoeken: een jong meisje dat al vier maanden niet gegeten heeft, maar op miraculeuze wijze nog steeds leeft. In het dorp wordt zij bijna als een heilige vereerd, en haar slaapkamer is uitgegroeid tot een pelgrimsoord. De verpleegster, echter, blijft sceptisch en vertrouwt op wetenschap in een gemeenschap die religie als leidraad neemt. Wat begint als een confrontatie tussen geloof en rede, ontvouwt zich langzaam tot een dieper psychologisch drama. De ware ontknoping ligt niet in het ontrafelen van het wonder, maar in de morele en emotionele dilemma's die naar de oppervlakte komen. De film — die in Nederland geen bioscooprelease kreeg en direct op Netflix verscheen — is opvallend stijlvol gemaakt. 'The Wonder' is set in 1862, when an English nurse (Florence Pugh) travels to a remote Irish village to investigate a peculiar case: a young girl who hasn’t eaten for four months, yet miraculously remains alive. In the village, she is venerated almost as a saint, and her bedroom has become a site of pilgrimage. The nurse, however, remains skeptical and places her trust in science, in a community guided by religious faith. What begins as a clash between belief and reason slowly unfolds into a deeper psychological drama. The true revelation lies not in solving the mystery of the “wonder,” but in the moral and emotional dilemmas that come to the surface. The film — which didn’t receive a theatrical release in the Netherlands and went straight to Netflix — is strikingly stylish. The production values are high, with beautiful period design, a restrained narrative pace, and bleak Irish landscapes that make it a perfect watch for a chilly autumn evening.

THE GILDED AGE

Onze HWP'er Sebastiaan Coops probeert de rest van de redactie al tijden te overtuigen om The Gilded Age eens te gaan kijken. Eindelijk zijn we om. En we denken stiekem dat jullie dat ook zullen zijn! The Gilded Age speelt zich af in het New York van de jaren 1880 en ontleent haar naam aan het bijbehorende tijdperk: een tijd van snelle economische groei, toenemende immigratie vanuit Europa, de uitbreiding van de industrialisatie, maar ook corruptie en een grote verdeeldheid van welvaart. Tegen deze achtergrond speelt zich de competitie af tussen de old money familie Van Rhijn en de nouveau riche familie Russell die tegenover elkaar komen te wonen. Het is niet alleen de aankleding en sfeer van de serie die deze serie helemaal perfect maken voor de herfst, ook onderwerpen als de African-American upper class, huishoudelijke hulpen, en de sociale en wettelijke macht van vrouwen komen aan bod, waardoor het een geweldige serie is voor vrouwengeschiedenisliefhebbers!

'The Gilded Age' is set in 1880s New York and takes its name from the corresponding historical period: a time of rapid economic growth, increasing immigration from Europe, the expansion of industrialization—but also corruption and stark wealth inequality.

Against this backdrop unfolds the rivalry between the old-money Van Rhijn family and the nouveau riche Russells, who move in across the street. It’s not just the stunning visuals and atmospheric setting that make this show perfect for autumn—it also explores themes such as the African-American upper class, domestic servants, and the social and legal power of women, making it a fantastic watch for anyone interested in women’s history!

MOED EN TEGENSPOED

De Bourgondische tijd was in alle opzichten voorspoedig, maar niet voor de positie van de edelvrouw. In deze overgangstijd van middeleeuwen naar renaissance pikten mannen het niet langer dat vrouwen in eigen naam bestuurden. De vrouwen verzetten zich. De eerste vrouw die alarm sloeg was Christine de Pisan, maar ook later bestreden vele edelvrouwen de teloorgang van hun waardigheid. Tien edelvrouwen passeren in Moed en Tegenspoed van Edward de Maesschalck de revue. Zij waren vaak moedig, maar steeds meer machteloos. De Maesschalck brengt deze vrouwen voor het voetlicht en laat hen opnieuw schitteren. Tussendoor gaat zijn aandacht ook naar fenomenen als bastaards, nonnen, begijnen, zieneressen, politiek actieve vrouwen en vermeende heksen, vrouwenkleren en juwelen, en bovenal naar liefde, seks en ongepaste mannengrappen.

The Burgundian era was prosperous in every respect—except for the position of noblewomen. In this transitional period from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, men increasingly refused to accept women governing in their own name. The women resisted. The first to sound the alarm was Christine de Pisan, but many noblewomen later fought against the decline of their dignity. In 'Moed en Tegenspoed' ('Courage and Adversity') by Edward de Maesschalck, ten noblewomen are brought to the fore. They were often courageous, yet increasingly powerless. De Maesschalck shines a spotlight on these women and allows them to shine once more. Along the way, he also turns his attention to phenomena such as bastards, nuns, beguines, female visionaries, politically active women and alleged witches, women's clothing and jewelry, and above all, love, sex, and inappropriate male jokes.

DOWNTON ABBEY

Voor onze HWP'er Maartje Kramer is de serie Downton Abbey een perfect kostuumdrama om te kijken in de herfst. De serie speelt zich af op het fictieve Downton Abbey, het landgoed van de graaf en gravin van Grantham, en volgt de levens van de aristocratische familie Crawley, de drie dochters Mary, Edith en Sybil en hun bedienden in de vroege regeerperiode van Koning George V. De familie zien de wereld om hun heen in rap tempo veranderen, waardoor het vaak vraag is of ze met de ontwikkelingen meegaan om hun landgoed te bewaren voor de volgende generatie - zeker gezien ze alleen vrouwelijke nakomelingen hebben. According to our HWP-editor Maartje Kramer, Downton Abbey is the perfect period drama to watch in autumn.The series is set at the fictional Downton Abbey estate, home to the Earl and Countess of Grantham, and follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family — including their three daughters Mary, Edith, and Sybil — and their household staff during the early reign of King George V.

The family watches the world around them change rapidly, and it’s often a question of whether they’ll adapt to these developments in order to preserve their estate for the next generation — especially since they have only female heirs. So hurry up and finish the series, and then top it off with the brand-new film Downton Abbey: The Last Chapter!
