EMMA
Deze Jane Austen adaptatie is langzaamaan onze favoriet geworden! Hoe kan dat ook anders met Anna Taylor-Joy als de match-makende Emma, Josh O' Connor als de snobistische Mr. Elton, Mia Goth als de onverfijnde Harriet Smith, en Johnny Flynn als de meest gallante Mr. Knightley allertijden? De komedie is hilarisch snijdend, de sets in pastel droomachtig, en de winter figureert prominent in deze versie, wat hem perfect maakt om te kijken wanneer je lekker thuis blijft nu het echt koud is buiten.
This Jane Austen adaptation has slowly become our favourite! How could it not be with Anna Taylor-Joy as the match-making Emma, Josh O' Connor as the snobbish Mr Elton, Mia Goth as the unsophisticated Harriet Smith, and Johnny Flynn as the most gallant Mr Knightley of all time? OUTLANDER
Wat zou je doen als je zou kunnen tijdreizen? Naar de achttiende eeuw? In Schotland? Waar de historische mannen knap en gespierd zijn en traditionele kilts dragen? Natuurlijk kijkt de HWP redactie de serie Outlander maar al te graag vanwege de steamy scènes tussen Claire Beauchamp Randall en Jamie MacKenzie Fraser. Maar we kijken ook graag naar de interessante implicaties van tijdreizen - aangezien worden voor een heks, bijvoorbeeld, omdat je als moderne vrouw medische kennis hebt, of aangestaard worden omdat je een geheel gave huid hebt die niet is aangetast door de pokken.
What would you do if you could travel through time? To the eighteenth century? In Scotland? Where the historical men are handsome, and muscular, and wear traditional kilts? Of course, the HWP editors love watching the series Outlander because of the steamy scenes between Claire Beauchamp Randall and Jamie MacKenzie Fraser. But we also love watching the interesting implications of time travel - being mistaken for a witch, for example, because you are a modern woman with medical knowledge, or being stared at because you have flawless skin that is unaffected by smallpox.
ANNA KARENINA
Ga je dit jaar net als de IJslanders boeken uitwisselen met je familie en vrienden, om die vervolgens lekker te lezen tijdens de kerstdagen? Geef één van hen dan dit meesterwerk van één van de beste auteurs allertijden! (Of geef hem aan jezelf natuurlijk) Een epische roman over realistische liefde en de verstikkende regels van de Russische upperclass, middels het verhaal van Anna Karenina. Anna lijkt alles te hebben - schoonheid, positie, populariteit, rijkdom, een goede echtgenoot, en een lieve zoon. Maar dan wordt ze verliefd op de jonge graaf Vronski.

(Or give it to yourself, of course) An epic novel about realistic love and the stifling rules of the Russian upper class, through the story of Anna Karenina. Anna seems to have everything - beauty, position, popularity, wealth, a good husband, and a sweet son. But then she falls in love with young Count Vronsky.
A CASTLE FOR CHRISTMAS
Ach, geen enkel winterlijstje is compleet zonder een Hallmark romcom kerstfilm. En van alle exemplaren op deze oververzadigde markt, is A Castle for Christmas onze favoriet. Na een PR-schandaal vertrekt bestsellerauteur Sophie Brown naar een klein plekje in Schotland om aan een nieuw boek te werken. Wanneer ze interesse toont in het plaatselijke kasteel dat te koop staat, krijgt ze het aan de stok met de norse eigenaar. Schotland in de winter, Carey Elwes en Brooke Shields als love interests, en een gezellig breiclubje. Maak het lekker knus thuis en ga zitten voor deze feelgood-film!
Ah, no winter list is complete without a Hallmark romcom Christmas movie. And out of all them, on this oversaturated market, A Castle for Christmas is our favourite. After a PR scandal, bestselling author Sophie Brown leaves for Scotland, to work on a new book in a quaint little village. When she takes an interest in the local castle that just happens to be for sale, she gets into an argument with its gruff owner. Scotland in winter, Carey Elwes and Brooke Shields as the love interests, and a cosy knitting club. Make yourself comfy and cosy and sit down for this feel-good film!
CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?
En meteen door naar een film over een serieuzer onderwerp. Wat doe je als je schrijfcarrière in het slop zit? En je bovendien een behoorlijk moeilijke persoonlijkheid hebt die je kansen er niet makkelijker op maken? Lee Israel ging in 1991 brieven van beroemde schrijvers en acteurs vervalsen voor de verkoop. Het was in ieder geval lucratief genoeg om de dierenarts rekeningen voor haar kat te betalen. En toen ze gesnapt werd, kon ze het verhaal tot een boek verwerken. Wat dus weer is verfilmd - met Melissa McCarthy en Richard E. Grant in de (Oscargenomineerde!) hoofdrollen.
And straight on to a film on a more serious subject. What would you do if your writing career was in the doldrums? And you also have a pretty difficult personality that doesn't make your chances any easier? Lee Israel started forging letters from famous writers and actors and sell them for money, back in 1991. At least it was lucrative enough to pay the vet bills for her cat. And when she got caught, she was able to turn the story into a book. Which has thus been translated to the silver screen - with Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant in the (Oscar-nominated!) lead roles.
ALIAS GRACE
We kennen Margaret Atwood natuurlijk allemaal van The Handmaid's Tale (waarover straks meer). Wat weinig mensen weten is dat er op Netflix nog een andere sterke serie te streamen is, die gebaseerd is op een boek van de Canadese Grand Dame van de Letteren. Alias Grace is een gefictionaliseerde versie van het leven van de Iers-Canadese dienstmeid Grace Marks, die in 1843 werd vervolgd voor de moord op haar werkgever en diens huishoudster.
We all know Margaret Atwood from The Handmaid's Tale (but more about that one later). What few people know is that there is another powerful series available for streaming on Netflix, based on a book by the Canadian Grand Dame of Letters. Alias Grace is a fictionalised version of the life of the Irish-Canadian maid Grace Marks, who was prosecuted in 1843 for the murder of her employer and his housekeeper.
MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS
Geen seizoen dan de winter is beter voor dit meesterwerk van de koningin van de detective romans. Net na middernacht wordt de beroemde Oriënt-Express tot stilstand gebracht door een sneeuwstorm. Daten is een ramp voor jonge vrouwen, zo ondervind ook Noa, een alleenstaande graphic designer uit een willekeurige stad ergens in Amerika, die online daten opgeeft. Wanneer ze toevalligerwijze Steve ontmoet, besluit ze om hem een kans te geven. Om er al snel achter te komen dat hij er op zijn zachtst gezegd vreemde voorkeuren op na houdt. Deze geniale grindhouse thriller speelt met de hoogte- en dieptepunten van 21ste eeuwse relaties en romantiek, wat regelmatig op je lachspieren werkt, maar wat deze film ook een bloedstollende rit maakt.
Dating is a disaster for young women, Noa finds. She is a single graphic designer from a random town somewhere in America, who's giving up on online dating. When she coincidentally meets Steve, she decides to give him a chance. Only to find out quickly that he has strange preferences, to say the least. This genius grindhouse thriller juxtaposes the highs and lows of 21st-century relationships and romance, which will make you laugh out loud a lot, but which also makes this film a blood-curdling ride.
CAROL
Gebaseerd op de klassieke roman The Price of Salt van Patricia Highsmith, neemt de film Carol je mee naar het winterse New York van de jaren 1950. In de Big Apple, in een groot warenhuis, werkt de naïeve Therese, die ervan droom om fotografe te worden. Zij ontmoet net voor de kerst de glamoureuze Carol, die midden in scheiding ligt en die nog een pop moet kopen voor haar dochtertje. Carol laat haar handschoenen per ongeluk op de toonbank liggen, wat een mogelijkheid biedt voor de twee vrouwen om elkaar beter te leren kennen - in een tijd waarin homoseksuele relatie tussen vrouwen illegaal waren.

In the Big Apple, in a big department store, the naive Therese works as a shop girl, while she dreams of becoming a photographer. Just before Christmas, she meets the glamorous Carol, who is in the middle of a divorce and has yet to buy a doll for her little daughter. Carol accidentally leaves her gloves on the counter, which provides an opportunity for the two women to get to know each other better - at a time when homosexual relations between women were still illegal.
THE HANDMAID'S TALE
En daar is Margaret Atwood weer. Dit keer met de meest recente adaptatie van haar magnum opus: The Handmaid's Tale. In deze magistrale serie, volgen we Offred, een dienstmaagd in Gilead, een theocratische staat waar vrouwen geen rechten (meer) hebben. Offred, die ooit een vrij leven heeft geleid met haar man en dochter aan de oostkust van de Verenigde Staten, is nu eigendom van Fred, één van de leiders van Gilead. Als zodanig, moet zij haar meester en diens onvruchtbare vrouw voorzien van een kind.
And there is Margaret Atwood again. This time with the latest adaptation of her magnum opus: The Handmaid's Tale. In this magistic series, we follow Offred, a handmaid in Gilead, a theocratic state where women have no rights (anymore). Offred, who once lived a free life with her husband and daughter on the east coast of the United States, is now owned by Fred, one of the leaders of Gilead. As such, she must provide her master and his infertile wife with a child.
WINTER
De Schotse schrijfster Ali Smith heeft een heel seizoenenserie geschreven, waarvan Winter het tweede deel is. Vier mensen vieren samen kerst in een kast van een huis in Cornwall, ook al zijn ze eigenlijk vreemden voor elkaar. Zoon Art voegt zich bij matriarch Sophia en haar zus Iris. Hij neemt Lux mee, van wie moeder en tante denken dat het de vriendin van Art is, Charlotte. Maar de winter maakt dingen scherper zichtbaar en Lux weet op magische wijze Art, Iris en Sophia dichter bijeen te brengen.
Scottish writer Ali Smith has written an entire seasonal series, of which Winter is the second part. Four people celebrate Christmas together in small house in Cornwall, even though they are actually strangers to each other. Son Art joins matriarch Sophia and her sister Iris. He brings along Lux, whom mother and aunt think is Art's friend Charlotte. But winter makes things sharper and Lux magically manages to bring Art, Iris and Sophia closer together.
LOVE ACTUALLY
Misschien is dit niet de meest voor de hand liggende keuze voor een vrouwenhistorisch platform. Maar er zijn bij deze film, die inmiddels ook alweer 20 jaar oud is, zoveel kritische genderhistorische vragen te stellen! Bijvoorbeeld: als je crush het duidelijk moeilijk heeft met de zorg voor een jongere broer, dan hoef je haar toch niet meteen af te wijzen? Of: welke 21ste eeuwse vrouw gaat in op een huwelijksaanzoek van een man met wie ze 1 keer heeft gezoend? Met wie ze bovendien geen gezamenlijke talen deelt! Waarom vindt iedereen Natalie dik? En wie haalt het ins godesnaam in zijn hoofd om vreemd te gaan op Emma Thompson? Ga maar eens kijken om te zien wat er allemaal in je op komt!
Perhaps this is not the most obvious choice for a women's history platform. But there are so many critical gender-historical questions that can be posed while watching this film - which had celebrated its 20th birthday last year. For example: if your crush is clearly having a hard time caring for a younger brother, you don't have to immediately reject her, do you? Or: what 21st-century woman accepts a marriage proposal from a man with whom she has made out once? With whom, moreover, she shares no common languages! Why does everyone think Natalie is fat? And who on earth gets it into their heads to cheat on Emma Thompson? Go check it out to see what all comes to mind!
WICKED LITTLE LETTERS
Met goede reden hebben meerdere leden van de HWP redactie deze film meer dan 1 keer in de bioscoop gezien. Wicked Little Letters heeft een geweldige cast, met o.a. Olivia Colman en Jessie Buckley, is nu te zien op Netflix, en is gebaseerd op een hilarisch vrouwenhistorisch verhaal. In de jaren 1920 liep een burenruzie in Groot-Brittannië helemaal uit de hand, toen Edith Swan obscene briefje begon te ontvangen. Ze verdacht meteen haar buurvrouw Rose Gooding, die een alleenstaande moeder was, en bovendien regelmatig grove taal uitkraamde. Maar was zij het wel echt?
With good reason, several members of the HWP editorial team have seen this film more than once in cinema. Wicked Little Letters has a great cast, including Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley, the movie is now available on Netflix, and the story is based on a hilarious story from women's history. In 1920s Britain, a neighbourly argument got completely out of hand, when Edith Swan started receiving obscene notes. She immediately suspected her neighbour Rose Gooding, who was a single mother, who regularly uttered coarse language. But was it really her?
MATILDA
Wij wilden vroeger allemaal Matilda zijn. Zonder de akelige ouders misschien. Maar de hoogbegaafdheid en superkrachten waren wel behoorlijk cool. Danny DeVito veramerikaanste het meesterwerk van de Engelse schrijver Roald Dahl, maar dat maakt niet zoveel uit: de film is net zo'n klassieker geworden als het boek en is een must watch rond de kersttijd.
We all wanted to be Matilda when we were little. Without the nasty parents, perhaps. But the giftedness and superpowers were pretty cool. Danny DeVito Americanised the masterpiece by the English author Roald Dahl, but that doesn't really matter: the film has become as much of a classic as the book and is a must watch around Christmas time.
BRIDGET JONES
Momenteel wordt er hard gewerkt aan alweer een vierde Bridget Jones' Diary film, dus is er des te meer reden om deze winter de originele te kijken. En geloof ons, na bijna 25 jaar voelt ie nog steeds zo fris aan als toen. Niet in de minste zin omdat de titulaire Bridget Jones, een jonge dertiger die op een goede nieuwjaarsdag besluit om 'controle over haar leven te nemen' door een dagboek bij te houden, zo herkenbaar is.
A fourth Bridget Jones' Diary film is currently in the works, so there's all the more reason to watch the original this winter. And believe us, after almost 25 years, it still feels as fresh as it did back then. Not in the least because the titular Bridget Jones, a young thirty-something who decides on a good New Year's Day to ‘take control of her life’ by keeping a diary, is so relatable.
