ZIJ BLOOST, HIJ WEET RAAD

Een gepensioneerde lerares en een sekswerker treffen elkaar in een hotelkamer. Zij is sinds twee jaar weduwe. Hij is ingehuurd om haar seksuele ervaring op te vijzelen. Zij is ontzettend nerveus. Hij de kalmte zelve. Zij bloost. Hij weet raad. Zij deelt details over haar persoonlijke leven. Hij maar spaarzaam. Zij heeft een valse naam opgegeven. Hij ook. En toch vinden de twee hun eigen vorm van intimiteit bij elkaar, die een levensveranderende ervaring teweegbrengt.
De Britse comedian en actrice Katy Brand schreef het verhaal, dat in 2022 is uitgekomen als de film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, tijdens de pandemie. De afgesloten hotelkamer die het decor vormt en de slechts twee acteurs (Emma Thompson en Daryl McCormack) die hun opwachting maken, zijn overduidelijke hints naar dit gegeven. De kamer doet denken aan de beperkte mobiliteit die ons was opgelegd, net als de interactie tussen de twee hoofdpersonages, die herinneringen opwekt aan het één-op-één contact waar we de afgelopen jaren aan gewend zijn geraakt door COVID-restricties. Aan de andere kant is de manier waarop de twee voor elkaar onbekende hoofdpersonages toenadering tot elkaar zoeken in hun aparte klantendienst-relatie, een prachtige boodschap dat je na corona je weer buiten je vertrouwde kring contact mag opzoeken. En dat het zo ontzettend de moeite waard is als je dat doet.
Maar het thema rondom de intimiteit tussen Nancy en Leo doet nog zo veel meer. Het draagt allereerst positiviteit over seks met zich mee. Nancy is duidelijk het slachtoffer van de zogenaamde orgasmekloof, het madonnacomplex, de rigide regels die onze maatschappij heeft gehangen aan vrouwelijke seksualiteit. In andere woorden: ze heeft nog nooit lol beleefd aan seks. En dat is waar Leo zijn intrede doet. Maar hoe open zijn denkbeelden over seks ook zijn, zelfs hij is niet helemaal vrij van littekens. Hun ontmoetingen hebben een blijvende indruk op beide personages. De interactie tussen Nancy en Leo brengt het publiek hopelijk bij, dat seks niet alleen hartstikke leuks is, maar ook hoe belangrijk het is dat we er ons zonder schaamte aan kunnen overgeven. En in het verlengde, hoe vernietigend negatieve oordelen werken op de beleving van genot.
De film is daarnaast een ode aan lichaamspositiviteit, in het bijzonder voor de oudere vrouw. Emma Thompson heeft het er tijdens de promotie van de film haar missie van gemaakt om vrouwen beter te laten voelen over hun eigen lichaam. Die bekende reels, posts en video’s op social media, waarin ze andere vrouwen maant om nooit op dieet te gaan (‘Walk away from the diet!’): ja, dat zei ze allemaal in de aanloop naar de première van Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. Haar personage Nancy, die de zestig is gepasseerd, huurt opzettelijk een veel jongere gigolo in om beter over zichzelf te voelen. Maar wanneer ze hem in levenden lijve aanschouwt, wordt meteen duidelijk hoe onzeker ze is over haar uiterlijk. Leo had niet liever voor haar kunnen zijn door precies uit te zoeken wat zij nodig heeft om zich comfortabel te voelen. En met succes. Nancy gaat steeds lekkerder in haar vel zitten. En je kan het als kijker niet helpen dat je haar steeds meer door de ogen van Leo gaat bekijken. Ze wordt met de minuut leuker en aantrekkelijker.
Toch blijven er nog een aantal barrières overeind staan die afgebrokkeld moeten worden. Al tijdens de tweede sessie geven de twee hoofdpersonages aan elkaar toe dat Nancy en Leo niet hun echte namen zijn. Nancy is bang ontdekt te worden, om als iemand die voorheen lesgaf in verband te worden gebracht met prostitutie. Maar ook vreest ze voor oordeel, omdat ze een vrouw is die het lef heeft haar seksualiteit te (her)ontdekken. Leo heeft aan de andere kant zijn eigen redenen om een pseudoniem te kiezen. Hoe comfortabel hij zich ook lijkt te voelen in zijn vak, hij verbergt zich achter een schuilnaam. Niemand mag weten wat hij voor de kost doet, want de wereld buiten de hotelkamer is sekswerkers niet vriendelijk gezind. Laat staan familie en vrienden. Leo is doodsbang voor de afwijzing van degenen die hem het dierbaarst zijn. Terwijl Nancy wél deelt waar zij vandaan komt, gooit Leo een behoorlijke muur op. Maar wanneer hij die eindelijk neerhaalt, kan het plezier pas écht beginnen en wordt de laatste boodschap van de film duidelijk: je kan pas ten volle van intimiteit genieten als je open naar elkaar toe bent.
Godzijdank heeft Katy Brand de twee hoofdpersonages niet met elkaar laten eindigen. Dat zou de hele film teniet hebben gedaan. Nee, het resultaat van de ontmoetingen tussen Nancy en Leo heeft een veel beter resultaat. Ze hebben de ander iets meegegeven waar ze elkaar niet meer voor nodig hebben. Nancy heeft meer zelfvertrouwen gekregen, Leo heeft een stap gemaakt om zijn eigen demonen aan te pakken. Zien ze elkaar ooit nog een keer? Nancy wenst Leo in ieder geval het allerbeste. En ze heeft hem aan al haar vriendinnen aanbevolen.

A retired teacher and a sex worker meet in a hotel room. She has been widowed for two years. He has been hired to improve her sexual experience. She is extremely nervous. He is the picture of calm. She shares details about her personal life. He, sparingly. She has given a false name. So has he. And yet the two find their own form of intimacy with each other—one that brings about a life-changing experience.
The British comedian and actress Katy Brand wrote the story, which was released in 2022 as the film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, during the pandemic. The enclosed hotel room that serves as the setting, and the mere two actors (Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack) who appear, are clear hints of this context. The room evokes the limited mobility that was imposed on us, just as the interaction between the two main characters recalls the one-on-one contact we became accustomed to in recent years due to COVID restrictions. On the other hand, the way these two strangers seek connection within their unusual client-service relationship sends a beautiful message: after COVID, we are once again allowed to reach out beyond our familiar circles. And that it is absolutely worth doing so.
But the theme of intimacy between Nancy and Leo does much more. First and foremost, it conveys a positive attitude toward sex. Nancy is clearly a victim of the so-called orgasm gap, the Madonna complex, and the rigid rules society has imposed on female sexuality. In other words, she has never truly enjoyed sex. That is where Leo enters the picture. Yet, as open-minded as he is about sex, even he is not entirely free from scars. Their encounters leave a lasting impression on both characters. The interaction between Nancy and Leo hopefully teaches the audience that sex is not only great fun, but also how important it is that we can surrender to it without shame—and, by extension, how destructive negative judgments can be to the experience of pleasure.
The film is also an ode to body positivity, especially for older women. During the promotion of the film, Emma Thompson made it her mission to help women feel better about their bodies. Those well-known reels, posts, and videos on social media in which she urges women never to go on a diet (“Walk away from the diet!”)—yes, she said all of that in the lead-up to the premiere of Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. Her character Nancy, who is past sixty, deliberately hires a much younger gigolo to feel better about herself. But when she sees him in person, it immediately becomes clear how insecure she is about her appearance. Leo could not have been kinder in figuring out exactly what she needs to feel comfortable—and successfully so. Nancy grows more and more at ease in her own skin. And as a viewer, you can’t help but start to see her through Leo’s eyes. She becomes more likable and attractive by the minute.
Still, a number of barriers remain that need to be broken down. As early as their second meeting, the two main characters admit to each other that Nancy and Leo are not their real names. Nancy is afraid of being discovered—of being associated with prostitution as a former teacher. But she also fears judgment for being a woman bold enough to (re)explore her sexuality. Leo, on the other hand, has his own reasons for using a pseudonym. However comfortable he may seem in his profession, he hides behind a false name. No one must know what he does for a living, because the world outside the hotel room is not kind to sex workers—let alone family and friends. Leo is terrified of rejection from those he holds most dear. While Nancy does share where she comes from, Leo puts up quite a wall. But when he finally lets it down, the real joy can begin, and the film’s final message becomes clear: you can only fully enjoy intimacy when you are open with one another.
Thank goodness Katy Brand did not have the two main characters end up together. That would have undermined the entire film. Instead, the result of Nancy and Leo’s encounters is far more meaningful. They have each given the other something they no longer need each other for. Nancy has gained confidence; Leo has taken a step toward confronting his own demons. Will they ever see each other again? Nancy, at least, wishes Leo all the best—and has recommended him to all her friends.
